The Point Domain button available in the database hosting control panel has the ability to keep your domain, instead of ours, in the web address your users see when they access your database either by WebDirect or Instant Web Publishing. This option is called Domain Masking, and by default the connections made by your users' browsers are unencrypted as an SSL certificate is needed for your domain.
SSL Certificates for Domain Masking come in 2 types:
1) Standard SSL, $49/year - This certificate secures one specific hostname for a single domain name such as database.mydomain.com.
2) Wildcard SSL, $199/year - This certificate can secure an unlimited number of subdomains of a single domain as it is valid for *.mydomain.com. Therefore hostnames like www.mydomain.com, database.mydomain.com, inventory.mydomain.com, contacts.mydomain.com and so on call all be protected. This certificate could also be used outside of the domain masking feature, for example, by securing your main website.
In general, you should choose a Wildcard SSL certificate when you are trying to secure 4 or more databases (or hostnames) with same parent domain as each database that uses the domain masking feature requires its own hostname.
Both certificates can be purchased for one, two or three years of validity. In addition to the SSL certificate fee there is a $99 installation charge for whichever certificate you want to use. Purchasing certificates for longer validity periods will save you money in the long run as the installation charge will occur less frequently.
To continue, please let us know:
1) Type of certificate desired
2) Validity period for the certificate
3) Hostname to secure for certificate and the database name to which it points.
We'll then place the order, charge your method of payment on file and install the certificate.
