How do I point my own domain to my FileMaker server?

You can use a custom domain or subdomain — like filemaker.yourcompany.com — instead of the default your-hostname.fmphost.com address. Here is how to set it up.

Step 1: Get your server's hostname or IP address

Log in to your FMPHost dashboard. Your server's default hostname and IP address are listed on the server details page.

Step 2: Create a DNS record

In your domain registrar or DNS management panel, create one of the following:

  • CNAME record (preferred): Point filemaker.yourcompany.comyour-hostname.fmphost.com
  • A record: Point filemaker.yourcompany.com → your server's IP address

A CNAME is preferred because it will continue working automatically if your server's IP address ever changes.

Step 3: Wait for DNS to propagate

DNS changes typically take a few minutes to a couple of hours to propagate, though in some cases it can take up to 48 hours depending on your DNS provider and TTL settings.

Step 4: Add a custom SSL certificate

To prevent SSL certificate warnings when users visit your custom domain, you will need a custom SSL certificate installed on your server. See our article on adding a custom SSL certificate for details.

Need a domain?

If you do not yet have a domain, FMPHost offers domain registration starting at $20/year, included free when bundled with a web hosting plan. We can also manage your DNS records for you if you prefer to keep everything with a single provider. Open a support ticket or call us at (888) 520-8291 to get started.
